PJ Lacrosse Surges On

According to the "press release," it is 100% fully funded by the local youth group via fundraisers and donations.

All I can say is: "Congratulations!" The Lax group (which I am not a part of) was persistent with what they wanted and they put together a plan and the money to get it done. And if it is in fact 100% privately funded there should be no complaints from those who were against it.

For all who are concerned about the future of things like Mathletes, Science Olympiad, and all other "club" based activities which are supplementary to the curriculum.....better get ready to follow suit with self-funding if you want them to remain. With the ongoing cuts to the budget, It looks like our choices are becoming:
1) Put up ($)
2) Shut up
3) Move

  1. No problem with parents paying for their own child's sports activities. It would have been nice if the superintendent would have afforded the JV golf team and the girls gymnastic team the same opportunity. He sent both groups of parents on wild goose chases between the teachers and the athletic director. Never willing to step up and acknowledge that he fully intended to get rid of both sports!
Lost a lot of respect for him!!!!!

    1. Don't know enough about the golf and gymnastic teams, but how many kids were on each of those? Could they have even afforded to keep it going on their own? The Lax Community is on its way (if it's not already) to being the largest sports group contingency in PJ. Obviously the more people you have involved, the more cost effective it becomes.

    2. Not the point. Bossert cherry picked who he wanted to support. Why weren't they given the opportunity?

    3. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. I think you should really look at how passionate and unified the group that achieved what they wanted pursued their goal versus the one that didn't.

    4. What about the declining academics in this district? What's wrong with you parents? Really, LAX over Business classes? Are you kidding? This is really what's important to you? This is what you are putting energy into?
Our tests scores are dropping, we're reducing electives and teachers are getting laid off and you're still crying for a LAX team?

Something is seriously wrong with this picture!

    5. Don't blame Bossert, he just got bullied.

Finally!! Someone directing their dissatisfaction at the parents instead of the administrators!! Bravo!!

You want to change the culture of the school district? Change the culture of the parents. Plain and simple.

  2. Lax is not fully funded who do you think is paying for the Middle school teams? Not the parents!

    1. The MS Lax teams are entering their 3rd year. That's water under the bridge. Bossert said last year there would be no money allocated towards a HS program, so the parents (or whomever) ponied up the money for it to continue. It will be interesting to see how many programs that are cut due to the budget will persevere on the parents' private dime because they believe in continuing them. Not too many, I would bet. Kudos to the lacrosse people for making it their business to have these kids continue playing.

Yeah that's what the golf and gymnastic teams thought!

  3. Just hope in the years to come that someone thinks that adding another sport's program to our already thin contingency of athletes is a good idea.
    Time will tell! Just saying!

    1. Or maybe a re-evaluation of what sports are offered.

OK, maybe the golf and gymnastics should have been phased out instead of just dismissed to allow the kids participating to finish it out. But some sports just don't generate the same interest they once did anymore. And maybe they should consider cutting them instead of a sport that is gaining more and more momentum with each passing year.

Look at football. How can you field even a remotely competitive team with what, 16 or 17 true varsity players? They had to suit up JV kids for every varsity game this year. It's not the coaches fault, nor the kids that participated. It's lack of interest that killed football this year.

Things change. Otherwise there would be varsity archery (which I'm sure still exists somewhere).

      Delete
    2. Where did archery ever exist in schools?

      Delete
    3. You must be a wee-babe!
Yeah, it actually existed in my HS way back when....maybe 30 years ago (give or take).

      Delete
    4. I think point was....it doesn't really exist anymore because there is NO INTEREST.

So maybe cutting golf and gymnastics really wasn't too terrible if say...only 10 kids were doing it. Maybe some other sports should be considered for the chopping block as well. People clinging to things falling out of style due to tradition or past history tend to be left behind.

To quote my favorite sci-fi series: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few (or the one)."

  4. Bossett is just another misleading administrator. He supports adding another sport's program (doesn't matter to me if it's Lax or bowling) and still has done NOTHING to bring back any of the Business courses.
Where the heck is his priorities?
    He's just another big disappointment!

    1. If you had a parent outcry for the Business courses the way you had for lacrosse you would have your courses back.

I think far too many people are making the Lacrossse thing more about Bossert than the parents who were relentless in making it happen.

If we're going to talk about priorities, maybe we're looking through the wrong end of the peephole.

    2. We wouldn't need any administrators just let the public decide what they wanted in the school for their individual child. Everyone could just argue and fight over what was in the best interest of their particular child. If academics lost to sports so be it!
Why do we need any administrators, we should sit back and see who cries the loudest!

    3. "...we should sit back and see who cries the loudest!"

After 200+ years of this country's existence you are just figuring this out now?

Go ahead...put your Business Course Coalition together and get it done!! No one is stopping you. Oh..you don't want to? Too busy? Can't get enough interest? I see....

    1. Think Ferry already took are of em. "mislead" the board about NO ONE BEING AFFECTED when they took down the softball field at scraggy just like she "mislead" the board about the number of girls affected by squashing gymnastics. Seems to be a pattern here.

      Is someones pants on fire?

  6. "....Science Olympiad..."????

Last year, when the students when to Buffalo for the state competition, parents had to pay for the Hotel and the bus, too.

    3. Are there schools out there that would pay for hotel rooms for parents and kids? REALLY? I don't think that's a fair comparison. Busing I can see...but HOTELS?

Funding the club through the school year with taxpayer dollars is one thing, but actually footing the bill for their lodging (along with mom and dad) so they can travel upstate to compete is another.

Why don't we just setup the entire Varsity Soccer team at the local Hyatt during the state finals rather than having them coming home that night? They deserve that "Royal Treatment" more than anyone!!!

Hey look at that....I made a pun!!!!

    2. This is Port Jefferson, friend. Every kid is guaranteed a spot on a team.

Last year a then eighth grader was cut from the MS basketball team. One phone call from a parent and BOOM! he's on the team.

Because you know, we can't teach our kids that we don't always get what we want, that life isn't always fair, and that no one is capable of succeeding at everything. We all have to be EQUAL! Total Socialist BS.

  10. If the parents raise all the money can we have the 7th and 8th grade trips back for the kids. Return the state of the art middle school kitchen that isnt being used.
